The New York Mets have been looking to upgrade their lineup and fortify their rotation as the trade deadline approaches. They have been decimated by injury to both areas and have been scouting around the market. It appears that there is some traction on a deal potentially moving forward. With both Jacob deGrom and Francisco Lindor out due to injury, the Mets appear to have found a good trading partner in the Colorado Rockies to help flatten out their roster.
Per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the two clubs have been talking about a trade that would send pending free agents shortstop Trevor Story and Jon Gray to the Mets.
"Get your popcorn ready in New York as the Mets and Yankees are expected to rock the deadline. You might need extra butter and salt for the Mets, as I'm hearing a trade sending Story and Jon Gray from Colorado to New York might happen."
The story also mentioned that the New York Yankees also continue their pursuit of Story. If this rumor comes to fruition, the Mets would be essentially set for a deep playoff run. They have Carlos Carrasco coming back this Friday, Jacob deGrom at the beginning of August, Francisco Lindor shortly after, and a few other IL'd players also on the way.
The cost for the Mets will likely be fairly high following the price bar set by the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics swap of Jesus Luzardo and Starling Marte.
Stay tuned for the latest.
