SC Magdeburg were crowned the 2021 IHF Super Globe winner after beating European handball champions Barcelona 33-28 in the final which took place Saturday night at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.
The German team led 19-16 at half-time and maintained their lead in the middle to outrun their opponents by five points on the final whistle.
The final marked the end of the 10-team tournament which included representatives of the six continental federations as well as the last holders of Barcelona, wild card Magdeburg and representatives of Saudi Arabian host clubs Al-Noor and Al-Wehda .
The other matches of the final day also confirmed the ranking of all the competing teams.
Danish club Aalborg defeated Brazilians EC Pinheiros 34-29 to finish third, leaving the 2021 champions of the South and Central American handball confederation to settle for fourth place.
Earlier in the day, African champions Zamalek of Egypt beat Al-Wehda 42-22 in the Placement Round 5-10 to secure fifth place, while the Saudi side finished ninth overall.
Meanwhile, Al-Duhail of Qatar, champion of Asia, beat Al-Noor 38-22 to finish the tournament in sixth place. Al-Noor finished in seventh position.
San Francisco CalHeat, winner of the 2021 North American Championship and Caribbean Handball Confederation, finished in 10th place, after losing 32-23 to Al-Duhail on Friday night, while Sydney University of Oceania took the lead. eighth position after drawing 26-26 with Zamalek.
