MAG FABOLICIOUS: Common & Selita Ebanks Are TITILLATING On UPTOWN’s Aug/Sept 2014 Cover
Sexy Chitown rapper Common and fabulous fashion model/actress Selita Ebanks are scorching hot on UPTOWN’s August/September 2014 issue. In celebration of the magazine’s 10th anniversary “Music & Style” issue, Common got extra dapper in a streamlined Caruso black tuxedo, while Selita went sultry in a La Perla black bra and panties, while resting her body against the “Kingdom” rapper’s back. And we’re totally loving every bit of it!

In the interview with the magazine, Common (real name Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr.) dished on his 10th studio album Nobody’s Smiling, almost marrying tennis superstar Serena Williams, on being labeled “soft” and much more.

Here are some highlights:
Common is no stranger to violence:
His 6-foot-8 father, Lonnie Lynn, (Common was born Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr.) was a basketball playground legend who suffered from an addiction to drugs and the fast life. He once kidnapped Common, then a toddler, and his mother at gunpoint, taking them to a tryout with the Seattle SuperSonics to prove to recruiters that he was a family man.

On almost marrying Serena Williams:
Common is single now, and enjoying his unattached life, but says he believes in marriage. He thought it would happen with Williams, but he is taking his time now before he jumps into something else. “If I’m in it as much as I was with Serena, as much as I loved her...it takes time to heal and find that peace to be able to move on.”

On being labeled as "soft":
"I’m hardcore which to me is coming from the heart. Putting your heart on that paper and being true."
Speaking for the first time on the death of close friend and industry peer J. Dilla:
"He was physically deteriorating. It would be sad for me to see. You know you coming home healthy. You feel guilty. It brought my own immortality to the forefront […] Until I did ["Rewind That"], I wouldn’t answer questions in interviews about him. I wouldn’t keep pictures around. That song has been part of my process in dealing with it still."

On his tenth album Nobody's Smiling and the youth of Chicago:
"One way of giving back is by having young Chicago artists on the album. This album is an action to increase awareness to people in the city. I owe it to Chicago […] The most beautiful thing about this project is it’s not ahead of its time, it’s not a throwback album. It feels like today. I feel like a new artist. There are people out there that don’t know my music, but they know me from acting. Some don’t know me at all."

Nice!

Peep Common’s full spread below:
So what’s next for the Chitown rapper? Well, he just wrapped up a demanding role as civil rights activist James Bevel, who helped set up 1963's "children's crusade" in Birmingham, Alabama, in the upcoming film Selma. The movie will chronicle the life of late civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., which will be directed by Ava DuVernay and produced by Oprah Winfrey & Brad Pitt. The film is expected to be in theaters by Christmas.

Common will also continue his starring role on the AMC western drama series, "Hell on Wheels," as Elam Ferguson, an emancipated slave. Dude is definitely putting in work

R. Kelly Sued By Longtime Manager For $1 Million
That R. Kelly just can’t seem to make any new friends, or keep his existing ones.
Derrel McDavid, the singer’s longtime manager–through the thick and thin–is suing for an alleged pre-negotiated sum of $1 million.
Via TMZ:
R. Kelly is an ungrateful tightwad who screwed over the guy who made him a star … at least according to a new lawsuit.
Derrel McDavid says he’s managed R. Kelly for decades and helped him navigate from a nobody to a superstar.
Things soured last year … and Kelly and McDavid parted company. According to the lawsuit they made a deal … Kelly would give McDavid $1.3 million and they’d walk their separate ways.
McDavid says Kelly made the initial $300K payment, but the deal called for additional $40K a month payments for 18 months and he hasn’t received a cent.
McDavid’s suing for the $1M balance.
We reached out to Kelly … but we haven’t heard back.
Kelly’s reluctance to pay the man may be related to his failed struggle attempts at peddling his new Bump ‘N Grind cologne. Maybe he needed McDavid around to tell him that was a terrible idea?

Justin Timberlake Slammed By Followers For Calling Madonna “My Mother Chucking Ninja”
Believe it or not, the word “ninja” is now a racial slur, and Justin Timberlake paid the price for not staying up-to-date with the PC police.
The “Like I Love You” singer wrote a happy birthday tweet to his “4 Minutes” duet partner Madonna only to receive a firestorm of criticism from some fans who were greatly offended.
Timberlake tweeted, "A happiest of Bdays to my mother chucking ninja, @Madonna!! Hope you have a great one, M!"
Shortly thereafter, Justin deleted the message after receiving replies like, “I just ended my relationship w/Justin," and "Get Justin Timberlake the f--k out of here."

Apparently, “ninja” is a substitute for the foul term “n*gga,” though it’s also a word that refers to a butt-kicking, martial arts-knowing warrior.

Meek Mill’s Legal Woes Intensify, MMG Member’s Pleas Rejected
Maybach Music Group member Meek Mill is going to spend a little more time behind bars after appearing in court and having a plea to finally taste freedom again rejected today (August 18).
Reports Sohh: Despite in-person support from DJ Khaled and his crew, Meek could not escape the penal system Monday.

After a 90-minute hearing in a packed courtroom that included DJ Khaled and members of Meek’s DreamChasers, Maybach Music Group and Atlantic Records teams, the judge shot down the appeal — which could have set the rapper free as early as today. In addition, the judge demanded that Mill, born Robert Williams, completes anger management and parenting classes, as well as seek drug and alcohol treatment before he is let out. If the “Ima Boss” MC doesn’t complete the three programs, the judge said he will have to do the entire six months of his sentence. (MTV)

Meek’s legal team also could not convince a judge to release him last month.

Meek Mill suffered a setback in his quest to get out of jail after a judge rejected his lawyers’ request for an emergency hearing yesterday. He has been jailed since July 11 for violating terms of his probation stemming from a 2009 drug and gun conviction. His lawyers filed a petition Thursday asking for the hearing within three days, in hopes of freeing the 27-year-old rapper – whose real name is Robert Williams. (Philly)

Jay Z & Roc Nation Sports Obtain License to Become Boxing Promoters
Jay Z has made another move in the game Roc Nation Sports founded by Jay Z in April 2013, has already made a big splash as sports agents now they’re taking on a new venture.
“There’s no question the sport of boxing needs a new player, someone who can do something different,” Michael Yormark, the president and chief of branding and strategy for parent company Roc Nation, told ESPN.com on Sunday night. “We’re energized and we’re going to make a difference. This is a huge priority to us. This is a highly serious business to us.”
Roc Nation Sports is also prepared for the challenge and made a big move as they’ve hired David Itskowitch to serve as the chief operating officer of its boxing division.
Itskowitch, who said Roc Nation Sports has already secured a promoters license in New York and Washington, D.C., is a highly respected and experienced executive with 18 years in the boxing business.
“We’re going to promote our first event by the end of the year and we’re currently strategizing on which fighters we will seek to sign,” Itskowitch told ESPN.com.

Itskowitch said Roc Nation Sports is willing to work with any promoter, manager or television network, something uncommon in boxing.
Said Itskowitch, “We will be a promoter, but our job won’t end once a guy fights on a particular Saturday night. We will promote him 365 days a year.”

I see why some people keep trying to attack Jay Z in the mainstream media. Gaining wealth, power and ultimately control, three things Black men are not suppose to do on this planet, let alone in America. Congrats.

“Scandal” Actor Joe Morton & “Orange Is the New Black” Star Uzo Aduba NAB Their FIRST Emmys!
Two of our favorite television shows scored big at the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre in L.A.
“Daddy Pope” aka Joe Morton, from ABC’s “Scandal,” nabbed his very first Emmy during the event. He won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama, playing the role of Rowan Pope (the father of Olivia Pope/Kerry Washington) in the popular series. His win marks the second Emmy award for the show.

Seems Daddy Pope was a bit nervous when it was time to name the winner in his category. He expressed,
"When my category came up, I looked for a door marked exit," joked Morton from the stage, acknowledging that he didn't expect to hear his name.

But once he received his award, all the jitters were gone and he was ecstatic about win. He said,

"It’s an incredible feeling to have been in the business this long — this is the first time I’ve been up for one of these things – and given who I was quote unquote up against, it’s terrific. My head is in the clouds somewhere, and my feet are trying to touch the ground."
Nice!
“Orange Is the New Black” actress Uzo Aduba aka Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren beat out her co-stars Laverne Cox and Natasha Lyonne for the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series award. This marks Uzo and the Netflix series’ first Emmy award.
During her acceptance speech she said,
"I don’t know how to say how incredibly impressed I am to be a part of this show day in, day out," said a teary-eyed Aduba from the podium after presenter Morgan Freeman handed the awestruck actress her award.
The “OITNB” actress stunned on the red carpet in an all white Costume National gown. She finished her look with her hair slicked back and minimal jewelry.
Once backstage, she could hardly contain her emotions saying,
"I feel so full, that’s why the tears come out," she told reporters, adding: "I’m stuffed. My cup runneth over right now. Mission accomplished, thank you."
Congrats to her!

“Orange Is the New Black” breakout star Laverne Cox hit the red carpet in a deep blue sparkly sequin Donna Karan gown. Although she lost to her co-star Uzo Aduba, she did make history as the Emmys' first openly transgender acting nominee.
“Archer” star Aisha Tyler posed it up on the red carpet in a purple hip hugging dress trimmed in gold, paired with rose camo print Givenchy sandals and a purple leather clutch.
And during the show, "OITNB" co-stars Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba and Natasha Lyonne shared a laugh on stage.
Then at the afterparty…
Laverne and her mother Gloria were all smiles during the Governors Ball at the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
And Aisha posed it up with Amber Nash, Leigh Jackson, writer-producer Adam Reed and actor and Chris Parnel during the ball.
Fun times

Pregnant Zoe Saldana & Marco Perego Get Flirty At The Four Seasons
Enjoying a relaxing afternoon, Zoe Saldana and her husband Marco Perego hit up the Culina restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for some gourmet lunch.
Upon making their exit, the expecting “Avatar” actress and her handsome beau couldn’t seem to stop smooching, and Zoe didn’t seem to mind showing off her growing baby bump.

And given that she’s half Dominican and half Puerto Rican, Zoe plans on teaching her children English, Spanish and even her husband Marco’s native tongue- Italian.
"Of course [our children] will speak the languages that we speak; my sisters and I grew up learning French and speaking English and Spanish, and because of that, we're able to understand Italian and Portuguese. But I'm going to have to make a conscious effort to speak Spanish to my children, because I speak Spanglish."

Jordan Brand Unveils Air Jordan 6 “First Championship”
Very rarely does a sneaker with a new colorway excite us. Today, however, the proverbial cow has jumped over the moon, with the announcement of the Air Jordan 6 “First Championship.”
These kicks are crazy. Much of the shoe’s clean look can be credited to a buttery smooth white leather upper. Subtle details like the clash of the speckled midsole and icy sole and well-placed hints of red make these a win for any Jordan connoisseur.
It’s unclear when the Air Jordan 6 “First Championship” will release, so stay tuned for more info
